Aight, well first I'll have to apologize for having been inactive for so long. I've not touched my drawing pads or tablet in a long time for various reasons, some of which include having been extremely busy getting politically active, stress, dealing with forced unemployment, sickness and other related issues.
That said, I have an incredibly important favour to ask of anyone who still reads these journals, or whom have any trans friends, Canadian or not.
I would kindly ask that everyone sign this; regardless of whether you're Canadian or not, young, old, whatever.
This petition aims to pressure the federal government of Canada to pass bill C-279, which will be debated again next month.
Bill C-279 seeks to "amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the grounds of gender identity or gender expression, as well as amending the Criminal Code to include gender identity and gender expression as a recognized group when offences are motivated by bias, prejudice or hate.
This will mark the 5th time that the NDP try to pass protections for trans people, which were nearly passed last year before the early elections killed the bill.
This would be a favour done to me and every other transgender Canadian out there, and to all trans people in general as having Canada pass these protections would also set the stage to motivate other countries to do so as well. This is especially pressing considering that the United Nations have already passed a motion calling the various countries of the world to do so.
This would make it illegal for employers to deny us work because of a medical condition that should in no way affect the quality of what we do. It will make it illegal for police to immediately profile us as prostitutes. It will make it so we can finally visit hospitals without fear of discrimination or harassment, which currently makes a great deal of us stay away from health institutions. It would put a cork in institutionalized discrimination and humiliation perpetrated by government services, such as unemployment, welfare and social insurance. It would prevent landlords from having the right to kick us out just because they don't like that we're going through with the process, which has been mandated as medically necessary.
And at the end of the day, all that discrimination comes, literally, at the cost of taxpayer money which we all know the government has better things to spend it on than to make our lives a living Hell.
So please, sign this and pass it along, if just so my sister can stop worrying that one day she'll see me on the news as the victim of a hate-crime murder. This all might sound surreal, but it happens and it's all too frequent, and I'm tired of seeing my friends marginalized, killed or taking their own lives because they can't deal with it anymore.
